PHYSICS LECTURE DEMONSTRATIONS
Spinning Balls
|
UNIT: |
Angular Momentum |
|
PURPOSE: |
Illustrate that, since, the angular momentum
of the system is conserved, the ramp will speed up as the first ball
rolls down the ramp, causing a delay between successive balls rolling
down the ramp. |

EQUIPMENT: |
| 1 |
Rotating Platform |
| 2 |
Angular Momentum With Three Balls |

Computer Signal Interface (optional) |
|
|
SUGGESTIONS: |
| 1 |
Remember to add two counter weights
when three
balls are rotating. |
| 2 |
Try different heights for the inclined
plane |
| 3 |
Do not rotate too fast, because balls
could fly into the air. |
|

DISCUSSION: |
-- |
1. Two balls at the top
2. One ball coming down while the first ball is still at the
top
3. One ball has reached the bottom while the other ball is at
the top
4. First ball is now coming down
5. Two balls at the bottom
6. Three balls at the top
7. One ball coming down while the other two balls remain at the
top
8. One ball has reached the bottom while the second ball is
descending down, and the third is still at the top
9. Third ball is now beginning to come down
10. All three balls have reached the bottom
