October 2006

Rino and John attended the 210th meeting of the Electrochemical Society in Cancun, Mexico and presented a paper "Spectroscopic and Kinetic Studies of Pr-doped Yittrium Silicate."

September 2006

Rino received the prestigious Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit Book Award for the book "Classical Theory of Electromagnetism" , published by World Scientific in 2004.

August 2006

A big  WELCOME to  HUMEYRA ORUCU to the Spectroscopy Group.  Humeyra arrived in Boston in the summer of 2006, with her husband Ali.  She was accepted  as a visiting researcher in the Physics Department of Boston College and in our Group, specifically...  Her PhD thesis title will be:  Spectroscopy of Chromium-doped Oxide and Fluoride Crystals.  She has a self imposed goal of completing the thesis in two years.  Good luck to her!

November  2005

The Spectroscopy Group of Boston College formally welcomes Isabella into the Group!

                               WELCOME   ISABELLA  !!!!

October 2005

Rino and John  attended the "208th  Meeting of the Electrochemical Society" in Los Angeles.

John presented a paper on: “Vibronic Studies of Optical Centers in YAG”

September 2005

Instead of the usual summary report to the Erice School Participants this year the report was in the form of a CD full with information.  It contained the usual printable report, all the presentation files of the lectures, plus a lot of memory photographs of the “ Erice Experience”.  The CD was a welcome treasure and memory of the School. The Erice 2005 report is available in the Erice School page

July 2005

Rino attended the International Conference in Luminescence ICL'05) in Beijing, China, he presented a paper on
“Up-conversion at different sites in Pr-doped Y3Al5O12,”  at the conference .  Present at conference were also Ottavio and Xuesheng .  Xuesheng presemted a paper on: “Down-Conversion and Up-conversion Luminescence Studies of New Electro-Optic Ceramics for High-Power Lasers.”

June 2005

The Erice school this year was attended by 70 participants from 18 countries.  Among the participants was Prof. Carl Wieman, 2003 Nobel Laureate in Physics, and Academician  Alexander  P. Voitovich, President, National Academy of Science of Belarus.

February 2005

The final NATO volume for the 2003  Advanced Study Institute held in Erice, Italy, in May-June 2003

published by Kluwer Academic Publishers .  A copy has been mailed to each participant.

January 2005

A surprise birthday party  (how old is he anyway?) was held for Rino where many of his past students showed up

SURPRISE! Rino was surprised this year on one of his many birthdays.

Eleven former graduate students attended this unusual celebration at the

Istanbul Café on Commonwealth Ave, not far from BC.

After the exquisite Turkish dinner the graduates reminisced on the ‘Good-Old-Days’ at Boston College and Erice, Sicily. Dennis Pacheco still has a vivid memory of the time when Rino bailed him out of a Sicilian Jail, among other stories…

Hello Mr. Chips! A memorable and rare opportunity with the Old Master….

November, 2004

At the Materials Research Society (MRS) in Boston, Nov. 29-Dec.3 2004, Gönül Özen presented two posters on recent work done by the group, and one poster of work done by her student Idris Kabalci. Xuesheng Chen presented one poster.

Luminescence and Upconversion Dynamics of Praseodymium in LiLuF4 Laser Crystals.

Effect of The Local Structure on The Spontaneous and Stimulated Emission Probabilities of Tm3+ in TeO2-ZnO Glass.

Composition Dependence of the Intensity Parameters in TeO2-PbF2 : Tm3+ Glasses

Optical and Upconversion Studies on New Electro-Optic Ceramic Materials.

Gönül Özen explains the effect of Thulium concentration on the intensity of the emissions in the 1100 -2000 nm wavelength region at the MRS meeting in Boston on Nov. 30, 2004.  Following the explanation, the student promptly fell unconscious.

June, 2004

The “Advances in Luminescence Research” workshop in Erice, held on June 1-7, 2004 was attended by 16 people. The final report is available.

Some of the participants are visible in this caption during a discussion scheduled at a local restaurant in Erice.
