March 31, 2008 Department of Physics researchers recently traveled to the 2008 March Meeting of the American Physical Society, the largest annual meeting of the physics community. This year’s meeting, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, marked the 50th anniversary of Physical Review Letters, one of the most prestigious physics journals. BC’s Department of Physics was represented by faculty, postdocs, research scientists, and graduate students. Members of the Department presented talks on the hottest topics in physics, such as properties of nanomaterials, superconductors, and magnetic and organic materials. Other areas of research upon which BC faculty and students presented included nanocoaxes and nanostructures, Fermionic atomic gases, and quasi-one- and two-dimensional systems. Assistant Professor Vidya Madhavan and Professor Ziqiang Wang gave invited talks at the Meeting. Prof. Madhavan, speaking at the invited session on High Temperature Superconductors, presented a talk entitled "STM Observation of a Bosonic Mode in the Electron-Doped Superconductor Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4-δ ." Speaking at the session on Cobaltates, Prof. Wang presented on "Novel electronic states in NaxCoO2: Role of strong correlation and Na dopant order." See the full list of BC's 2008 March Meeting talks here (.pdf). The 2009 March Meeting is slated for March 16th through 20th in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
